Starting from the mid-1800s, manufacturers all over Europe started using trademarks to claim legal properties on their products. Many of them thus became what we can now call brands, as they had their own selling and advertising companies, creative packaging design and unique products. This allowed them to gain trusted customers and increase their sales. However, these early marketing strategies and luxurious products were specifically made to attract wealthy and upper-class customers. The real change came with the industrial revolution, when new technologies, machines and faster means of transport allowed manufacturers to dela with the masses who needed everyday products like cereals, milk, bread. Consequently, packaging design changed as well.
Lithography printed paper (made by the first mechanized machine) light cardboard and paperboard boxes, wooden crates, paper bags and glass bottles were introduced as new (and cheaper) packaging design for the sale of every-day products.
