TCRE - Week 5.1 Homework

Updated: Apr 23

The importance of Introspection, Extrospection and Self Reflection to your processes of starting to design Assignment 2 assets based on your Assignment 1 research

The process of introspection includes various practices and mind processes that can be done to observe and understand (without judging), our internal emotional/psychological state of mind. It can go from being as simple as reflecting on how we respond emotionally to external stimuli (and how these emotions affect our behaviour, character or thoughts) and as deep as meditation. With regards to our assignment production and evolution from A1 to A2 mockups, introspection might be useful for me to identify what I am actually interested in and how I intend to reflect that into my TCRE practice. Some points/questions I believe might help this process could be:

  • within the field of audiovisual design, what aspects do I intend to explore exactly? Is it something I'm already familiar with or is it something new to explore?

  • What research/production/processes and methods do I need to conduct and experiment with in order to understand these points?

  • How do I intend to apply my knowledge and skills of sound and 3D art, to create audiovisual mockups for A2?

  • What do I already know and what do I need to improve?

  • Any resources/inspiration that might be useful to transform those thoughts into actual work progress? https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iRCOMOpEu_RG6loZ7DCNW8jJqm8wF_1BplKstgj2lUI/edit?usp=sharing

  • What software is best to use to achieve those goals? Why?

  • What are the pre-requisites/objectives of A2 (both practical and research)? What should I do to meet them all, to the best of my knowledge?

  • In response to those external stimuli (assignment brief, requirements,A1 research etc), how do I feel about it all? As I am still a bit confused and uncertain about to put my research into practice and actual visual work, how can I go about this?

  • How can I include a combination of introspection and extrospection through self-reflection in my TCRE practice?

Vital Synth

I am fairly new to using Vital Synth software, so I have been using this time to explore with the various tools and presets available. I have recorded a few sounds that resonate with me, and sounds I am not happy about yet. I have included these in a google drive folder, to make it easier to share. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1G2xQBKHVw3coaPh24dJXxoVtcxJdjJgE?usp=sharing

Describe the qualities of the sound and how you feel they connect to certain feelings or emotions, much like we have been doing with colour. Also consider if some of the colours/emotions you are already working with can be found sonically using Vital Synth

I am conducting experiments using Vital Synth and other digital tools to find out if there are any sound nuances I resonate with, and why. At the moment, I feel like I resonate more with sounds that have qualities such as:

  • high-frequency waves

  • low-pitch

  • fast tempo

  • mixed rhythms

  • round, brassy, deep timbre

I feel like these sounds, although they might at first seem dissonant and disturbing, I actually find them pleasing and relaxing after listening to them for a while.

Of course, there are some exceptions, where I tried experimenting with different sounds that do not find those categories mentioned above. Some examples are:

Brainaural

Create a blog post for the following:

  • Read through the site, have a play with the web app tools, and create a audio recording of the final results of your experimentation

  • Consider how you can work with different areas of the Audio Spectrum (review class lecture on Audio Spectrum Summary from slide 34). Consider how sounds in different areas of the spectrum can link up with colour resonance ideas

  • Psychoacoustics: I would be interested in exploring further the concept of psychoacoustics and the relationship between physical and measurable properties of sound, and their effects on our internal emotional state (change in behaviour, mood swings, instant reactions or responses we might be or not be totally aware of). However, including this is a much more detailed way in an audiovisual product is a bit challenging. For now, I am focusing on experimenting with the effects of sound on my mind and body, by playing around with BrainAural online tool. By changing, increasing, decreasing the different properties and levels of sound and noise (sound pressure, pitch, volume, noise, mix level etc), I am trying to understand what sonic range I resonate with the most and why - as well as understanding what sound or noises have the opposite effect on me. Hopefully this will give me some insights or starting points to develop further in connection with colour and 3D in further TCRE assignments.
