Week 8.1 Class Notes

Being professional

  • implications of your work with regards to socio-spatial awareness, individual and collective awareness

  • confirmation bias --------> highly- subjective and unique, problematic when putting our work out in public, we may not be open to conflict with alternative views of our work and critiques. Feedback should be objective and not take into consideration confirmation bias and point of views.

  • awareness of bias

  • Reactive vs. responsive

  • When asking questions and feedback: avoid "OR " questions (do you like this or that?). Think of objective goals, aims and objectives of the project.

  • sense of belonging

  • Feedback: not what you say, but how. Providing objective opinion not facts. Don't promote yourself. Avoid assumptions. Don't take things for granted.

CLASS ACTIVITY

Some feelings/words I felt when quickly viewing other sutdents' projects in class"

  • Rena: impulsive, quick, eruption, evolution

  • Angelene: exotic, tropical, meditation, as well as something slightly uncomfortable and tense in the sound.

  • Vu: Calm, smooth. Second prototype was visually intense, almost disturbing for me because the large purple rectangle was not aligned perfectly to the others and with the plane underneath.

  • Calvin: realistic soundscape (air conditioner noises). cool lighting effects, and interesting choice of piano music

  • Cameron: immersive sound (so cool, felt real), disturbing, continuous. Interesting choice of sounds with different pitch, rhythm, intensity. Interesting association of each sound (very rich and intense) to plain and solid colours on screen.

  • Valerie: Minimalistic and intense. Creepy but positively engaging. Although I didn't understand what those red shapes represent. (1st video prototype). Second video: desolation, solitude, emptiness. 3rd prototype, awesome music, great beat, mood and rhythm.

  • Ian: meditation, soft, swiftness,

  • Jace: active, engaging, waves, evolution. The surgery scene is intense, deep. Lots of thought and process behind it!

  • James: cool progression from soft music to more intense and rhythmic music. Countdown at the end made me laugh, though I probably shouldn't.

  • Kim: beautiful gradients, so smooth and engaging even without sounds. Also unpredictable, you never know where the colours are leading you. Really great work

  • Nicole: atmosphere, ambient sounds are really captivating + unique combination with piano melody. cool use of digital space and motion.

  • Ruijian: very interesting visuals, so much expression in simple drawings, underline the huge potential that simple sketches combined with music and motion design can carry. No need to overthink or complicate designs, simple, minimal things can carry a huge emotional potential.

  • Sky: great audiovisual relationship, great use of cold and warm colours but the voice over is kind of creepy, seems to pop out of nowhere.
